keypad within phone call not recognizing

i have a nexus 5x and recentlymy keypad stopped working while I'm on a call. I can access the keypad and press the numbers however it does not register. I've tried my apartment buzzer and my voicemail and nothing.
Help please!

Open the Phone app, tap Menu>Settings, and see if there's a DTMF Tone setting--if so, make sure it's set to Long.

If you're on verizon and using volte this is a known issue. Happens all the time with me on 4 different volte phones. Only definite fix is to turn off volte (and lose simultaneous voice+data) or use hangouts dialer and do the call using data.
