In all apps or only specific ones? Some apps have their own settings which might be overriding the default keyboard configuration.

hadn't thought of checking the other settings. I also checked it's behavior in other apps as well. thanks for the tips.

after fooling around with the settings for a while, I think I figured it out.

the sound I was hearing was actually the vibration from vibrate on keypress setting. the vibration has a much higher pitch than what I'm familiar with.

it just takes a whw to get used to a new phone I guess.
