Text Messages: Do photos sent via text take up memory?

And if so how do you delete them? I can't seem to find anything on the phone that 1) allows you to delete photos from text message threads and 2) anywhere that signals that they take up space on your phone. But I have A LOT of pictures in text message threads and if it's taking up space I'd like to get rid of them without deleting the whole thread.

They do take up space. Depends on the app you're using, but usually if you long-press on a specific message in the thread it should pop up or give you options to delete it. And yes, even the text in your texts is taking up space (just, obviously, way less than pictures).

What app are you using? Hangouts lets you delete pictures out of a thread while leaving the text intact. As far as how much space is being used, you can see that under apps in settings, but that is the total of everything including the app. I don't think there's a way to see individual thread space usage.
