Notifications on icon, not pull down??

Just got my 6p. I'm coming off of a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge (wonderful phone...too bad it doesn't work with Project Fi) running 5.1.1. With the Edge, I got notifications of new ______ on the icon. (i.e. if I had 10 new Facebook posts, there would be a tiny "10" on a corner of the FB icon or when I got my morning Bible verse, a tiny "1" would show up on the corner of that icon) What I get now is a notification on the pull down. Was the icon notification an Edge thing, a 5.1.1 thing or could it have been part of an app I d/l'ed? I'd sure like it back.

Those "active" icons are called widgets.

Long press an empty spot on your home screen, then tap Widgets, then find the Facebook widget (which is not the same thing as the Facebook icon..) and drag it to your home screen.

Adding widgets may work differently on Samsung devices but I presume the concept is the same.

Thanks. Quite a few of my apps (FB is one) don't seem to have a widget. Any trick to adding one (perhaps through the app store?) or am I SOL? Not the end of the world but it sure was handy on the Edge.

The only way I know to get notification counts on your icons is by using the Nova launcher with it's TeslaUnread add-on. This is what I use and it works perfectly! The notifications are completely customizable. Here are the links:

Nova Launcher Prime Upgrade (Needed to run the add-on apps): https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...com.teslacoilsw.launcher.prime&token=ASyIJ3M_
TeslaUnread: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...ls?id=com.teslacoilsw.notifier&token=lS0VCrwT

Now that I think of it, Facebook recently dropped their widget; there have been a number of threads on that subject recently - search the forums for "facebook widget".

Notification count is not an Android vanilla feature. You will need to use custom launcher like Nova suggested above.

Not widgets in stock Android, need Nova and TeslaUnread to get this as advised by another poster.

I use Nova Prime and TeslaUnread. As mentioned, badge count isn't built into vanilla Android.

I tried out Nova awhile back and I will not be looking back. It is a great extremely functional launcher, Tesla unread add-on being just one of many many many great features.
