Ok, please bear with me. This wipes the Nexus back to out of the box settings? Why is that? Other droid devices are so much easier to root you'd expect Google to make the Nexus so as well. I know the Kindle was a breeze in comparison.

Rooting does not do that--unlocking the bootloader does.

I see, and you have to unlock the bootloader to root, correct? Darn.

GOT IT!!! A buddy contacted me. The driver can be found .

1) Download the ADB/FB Driver Naked Samsung Driver 1.7.

2) Move it to an easy to remember directory

3) Then, on your computer, go to Control panel > hardware and sound > view devices.
Click nexus - click the "hardware tab" > "properties" > "change settings"
Select the "driver" tab, then click "update drivers"
Chose to manually update the drivers
Navigate to the "Universal_Naked_Driver_0.7" and have the system update from there

4) IT WORKS!!!!

1- should I do this before registering the device (mines still in the mail?) I assume it won't matter as it wipes it anyway. Ideally I'd do it before even putting it on wifi and updating to 4.1.1

2- how has Google handled updates in situations like this? Will we still be on the standard update path?

Unlock and root and you should remain on the upgrade path. Only when you change the system or flash a custom ROM will you leave it.. though if you head down that road once development gets started on this device you probably won't care about being on the upgrade path

what 2def said - but also if you flash a custom recovery it will prevent you from updating.

For future reference, I took some screen captures on how to install the drivers.

1) download universal naked drivers
2) unzip drivers (I chose to unzip them into the "C:\" directory)
3) get Nexus 7 to bootloader screen
4) plus in Nexus 7 via USB to computer
5) follow pics below

Looks very similar. A couple files are different sizes than the ones in my zip though.

I changed my post - use your driver (universal naked driver). My driver broke ADB and Windows visibility

I just got my Nexus 7 16gb retail, let it run the OTA update today then I proceeded to unlock it and try to root it. I'm stuck on a boot loop at the google logo (the unlock worked though) anyone have any easy tips to try to get this root to work? I am on windows.

it should still work. how long has it been on the splash screen?

if it's been more than say 5 min, do a battery pull, then boot into bootloader mode again and try the rooting steps again - assuming you got the bootloader unlock to go through.

if that doesnt work, i can instruct you on how to obtain root through temporarily booting clockwork and simply flashing superuser.

but the steps oughta work with the ota, I believe (checking now)

ok the r2 superboot doesnt effect rooting. since you're hung up on the splash, i think you should pull the battery and run the steps again and it should work

if it doesnt, i have the jb supersu and i can i can give you instructions on how to obtain root thru booting cwm and then flashing the supersu zip.

let me know what you want to do.

You can also hold down the power button to reset the tablet.

It would stay at the google logo for a little while then go blank, then back to the google logo, over and over. I've just now reflashed the JRN84D factory image and got it booting. I'm a bit wary to try again but I might in a little while. I had also tried the "r2" version of superboot on modaco's site with no luck.
