I have been using an ipod touch for handheld gaming fun and it was jailbroken and installous was my favourite app. I have recently purchased a google nexus 7 and i am not sure about the android world at all.

Can i do the equivalent of jailbreak and have an equivalent of installous on my google nexus 7 or can i have something that allows me to do what i could with those things?

I am not all that keen on 'proper hacking' and am only interested in getting all the apps i want to try out.

Thanks for any help you can offer and please bare in mind that i am oblivious to most things android and dont know where to start, thanks again.

Nope. But most apps have free version to try apps out. Welcome to android. We taking over baby. I owned the original G1 phone... Now original Nexus tablet.
