My camera reads "mount SD card" both when the old card is in or the new card I purchased. What does this mean and how do I fix so I can use the camera?

It is necessary to format the sd card during mounting of the card to the device. Also, it's important to follow the mounting/unmounting protocol when mounting/unmounting a new sd card. Simply removing or installing a new sd card isn't acceptable and one may get the error you've indicated above.
