Thank you to m4f1050 for pointing me in the right direction!

This is used to change the PPP user ID so that you can switch to another CDMA provider and use their data plans. Normally if you try to change the User ID to (ESN)@new.carrier.com, the phone will revert back to (ESN)@mdata.vmobl.com upon reboot. If you follow these directions, the settings should stick.

Warning: Do not do this unless you understand the consequences. You will lose access to your VM data plan by doing this. You will need to change your User ID back if you want to use VM again.

Download QXDM and QPST.

  1. Install both QPST and QXDM.
  2. Follow the steps found here to get your MSL code and to configure QPST. You can stop at step 8 of "Update your PRL". As a last resort, if the previous method fails, you can get your MSL code by following this.
  3. Download these rar'ed text files: Qualcomm.rar
  4. Unrar them and place them inside C:\Users\Public\Documents\Qualcomm\QXDM\Vendor\Qualcomm\
  5. Overwriting the original files. If they fail to overwrite the files, right click Diag.txt, select properties and uncheck "read only". Do the same for NVItem, txt.
  6. Open QXDM Professional
  7. If your phone isn't already recognized and connected, Go to Options > Communications and select the appropriate Target Port. This will be the port you configured in step 2.
  8. Once connected, under view, select NV Browser.
  9. Scroll all the way down to item 39939 and select it. The lower half of the window should show a list of values.
  10. Hit read. Take note of the values in case you want to reverse what we are doing, and then turn them all to zero under "input". You edit them by double clicking them
  11. Hit Write.
  12. Next, without touching anything else, open QPST Service Programming.
  13. Select Read, enter your MSL from step 2. An error will pop up, but ignore it.
  14. Edit M.IP and PPP Config - AN entries to your desire.
  15. Hit Write and Enjoy!

After you do this once, you can change your User ID by starting with step 12. You do not need QXDM any more.

With what networks does this mod enable the phones to work?

And, does this somehow enable roaming on VZW towers (e.g., one of the things that sets apart VM account from regular Sprint/SERO account)? Just curious.

No, not at all. You need to have an account with the carrier and activate your phone with them. After that, you do this so that your data plan works with them. I'm not sure which networks can use this.

So all this does is let you be able to keep the same phone but use it on a different carrier?

Re: [HOWTO] Edit PPP and M.IP to enable Data on Different Carrier

Exactly to be able to use 3G on a different carrier...

Okay excuse my lack of knowledge but say I were to activate a cheap plan with T-Mobile (if this method supports that carrier) and got a free phone with the plan. I just take the ESN from that free phone and do all the workings on the Optimus V and change the User ID etc and it will work? Hope I'm not sounding stupid or anything, sorry.

T-mobile = sim = completely different from CMDA.

What this is good for is taking your CDMA pone to another CDMA carrier that allows you to activate external phones. Metro PSC for example would take our phones. We would then need to do this to get 3G working. Because even though your Optimus V would be activated for use on their network, your data connection would not be configured correctly.

My wife took her evo to boost would your steps let me bring one to vm?

Ahh thanks so much for the explanation. It makes sense now.

Re: [HOWTO] Edit PPP and M.IP to enable Data on Different Carrier

Don't forget about changing the PRL to support the 3G change. That's something you have to do. If not, the phone won't even connect to the other towers to give you access. You'd have to make a custom PRL, I'm thinking.

Re: [HOWTO] Edit PPP and M.IP to enable Data on Different Carrier

Do you have the default Virgin Mobile settings.
Stupid me just found this thread now.
I figured I'd try a stock/rooted sprint rom so I could
##data# get and and write the settings down.
but it wrote sprints 3g settings by default already.
I just need to restore the settings on my Optimus V
which I can do in the data menu.
Thanks

9.Scroll all the way down to item 39939 and select it. The lower half of the window should show a list of values.

IN ITEM 39939 its blank for me, no info there. I have LG Optimus S. from spring. it wont let me change the setting in MIP. QPST service programming.

Re: [HOWTO] Edit PPP and M.IP to enable Data on Different Carrier

3. Download these rar'ed text files: Qualcomm.rar
4. Unrar them and place them inside C:\Users\Public\Documents\Qualcomm\QXDM\Vendor\Qua lcomm\5
I had to manually find the correct path for #4, it was a little different than stated.
without the unrar'd files in that location, the specified nv item isn't manipulable.

Re: [HOWTO] Edit PPP and M.IP to enable Data on Different Carrier

ok. I got the settings to stick kind of. I had to use windows xp. to use qxdm. but now 1. and 2.profiles get activated and the others deactivated. but I still cant get internet to work. or mms.

I'm I missing something?
