"Terminal Emulator" is not what you think an "emulator" is.

it allows you to enter text based commands (think DOS) that allow deep level functions such as flashing a rom to a particular part of the phones storage.

this is HOW you flash a recovery. its not a question of "cant I just flash or do i have to use an emulator"

You can make terminal emulator easier to use by setting your commandline like this:
/system/xbin/su
instead of /system/bin/sh -
now you will go straight to:
#

I use the Xionia version that end with a 6
prolly in the Sprint Forums. Home key is select.
I prefer it because it is full featured with the mount format options
and will see all recoveries so I've renamed my backups to Harmonia and Kraven so I know which is which.
