I have to say thanks as well, I just ordered an Optimus V on ebay and wasn't able to obtain the software version from the seller. So I might actually need to use this to root depending on the software version. Can the one-click methods be used with all prior software versions?

I rooted my phone a couple of months ago and have the overwhelming majority of my applications linked to the second partition of my sd card. I'm pretty satisfied with how my phone is set up. I occasionally use the phone as a hotspot.

Do most of you think it is worthwhile for me to install the security update and reroot the phone? Or should I just leave everything alone and save myself the time and effort?

I too had my phone rooted and apps linked to a second partition on my sd card then blindly installed the security update without thinking about what it will do with my rooted phone...lets just say that I just created a whole new headache for myself. I can't use any apps that were previously linked to by the Link2SD. All I see for those apps are the com.android....etc. and For some reason I the update left me with out Google Play.

So I'm hoping I can just reroot and all will be restored...but if anyone else has any ideas or similar issues...I'm all ears.

Just re root so link2sd can get su access and recreate mount scripts and you should be fine

No... Why would you need to update? This update was basically just a root block plus a radio update. If you want the updated radio you can get it here on the forums. There is absolutely no need to update

after trying to follow your steps, i get stuck at this block:

    adb shell rm /data/amit/*
    adb shell /data/local/flash_image recovery /data/local/VM670NH_recovery.img
    reboot shell reboot recovery
here is the output of the command, followed by my attempt to even get into the shell.
afterwards i saw the problem and just listed the devices to make sure it was still connected.

    [null@null Downloads]$ adb shell rm /data/amit/*
    - exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

    [null@null Downloads]$ adb shell
    - exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

    [null@null Downloads]$ adb devices
    List of devices attached

    any ideas?

Please post a copy of the entire command window's contents so we can see what is happening. Copy it all and paste it into pastebin.com, then post the pastebin URL here for us to check out.

Well i've spent the past 3 hours trying to learn about how to do this since i depend on my OV and bricking it isn't an option. I was gonna ask what app is good to run for the accelerometer but i'm just being impatient for this 1 click method that might come out. I'll wait, but i'll download the android sdk junk and update it just in case i need it.

Many, many thanks to jcase and JerryScript. I'm so glad to have root back. I did have to do a factory reset to get it to work, however. Didn't have permissions to do "rm /data/amit/*"

There were two minor typos/discrepancies in part 3 for me also. "adb shell reboot" will not work without su, which we of course don't have. "adb reboot" worked for me. The same goes for the next reboot command, "reboot shell reboot recovery", which also appears to have a typo (first word "reboot" should've been "adb"). "adb reboot recovery" was the command that worked for me. Just wanted to point that out in case anyone was confused with those commands not working.

Now if only there were a fix to restore wifi hotspot capability on the stock rom... The option is still there, just doesn't work.

If you have a Linux computer, there is a one click solution offered in the original xda thread.

I'll try to get a Windows version done soon.

Just wanted to say this process worked easily for me too with just the 2 typos mentioned above. I used adb reboot and adb reboot recovery. Also I think this should be stickied. Only a matter of time before they start shipping phones with the update already on them

Thanks for confirming. I had to do a factory reset with the donor phone as well when testing. I've updated the instructions in the OP to reflect this.

Jerry do you still have that rooted update zip? Now that I'm rooted it may flash with custom recovery. I'm willing to give it a try. Got nothing to lose lol.

Try reflashing VM's update and doing another factory reset, then try again.

Are you on a 2.2.1 or a 2.2.2? I have a 2.2.1 and due to some speculation I believe I will need to update and reroot know for sure the radio has been updated in my phone.

I just retested by restoring the donor phone to stock, reflashing the security update, then redoing jcase's root exploit. It worked flawlessly, opened terminal emulator and typed su and SuperUser gave me permission. If you are having trouble getting it to work, please write down the steps you take as you do them, and post them here.

a 2nd flash from the new stock recovery could possibly take the place of factory reset... its what i did to get the new radio to stick and i walked through the steps easily... even subbed in the normal IHO recovery instead of bobz.... bobz's never wants to mount usb storage for me and i have the 2.2.1 model so IHO recovery works good.

Just did this, had issues so here is my input:

I couldn't get adb to work after the device finishes booting, but it works fine during boot. So after flashing, I ran all the commands right after the android bootanimation started, wasn't too hard. So if your getting permission errors, try doing it quick during boot.

Just a side note guys anyone who wants stock rooted can flash the VM update.zip followed directly by jcase's rootme.Zip and you'll end up with stock rooted with recovery intact. The new zv9 radio won't be applied tho. So if your only doing it for the radio this isn't the way

    Thanks wraith,

Yeah, that would've been great, if we could just flash update.zip followed by rootme.zip and be done with it all, including radio. Still, this gets us back to yesterday's question if rootme.zip actually could be flashed by the new stock recovery if it were named update.zip.

Edit: Of course you'd have to take out the SD card in between in order to swap the two update.zips. Again, this is pure speculation
