Re: [ROOT] Virgin Mobile Security Update Now Rooted!!! Thanks jca

Ill wait for the 1 click method as I've tried DOZENS of times to use adb and failed, even bricked my phone once due to someone not putting a space or removing a space...either way I know NOTHING about Linux nor do I care to. So until then...

I'm sorry for the confusion on that command, try these and let me know which works:

adb shell reboot recovery

adb reboot recovery

adb shell
reboot recovery

Regardless, all you need to do at that step is reboot into recovery. Since there is no option in the power menu on stock ROMs, you can just turn off the phone, then boot into recovery by holding the following keys down until the LG logo goes away: Down_Volume + Home + Power

Oh okay, I could have just went further on through the steps and completed it! I was able to reboot with the 'adb reboot recovery' command. This worked like a charm! Thanks again! :D

I guess I'll wait for the one-click solution since I'm a newbie and don't fully understand the process. But thanks Jerry, we all owe you one.

I have to say thanks as well, I just ordered an Optimus V on ebay and wasn't able to obtain the software version from the seller. So I might actually need to use this to root depending on the software version. Can the one-click methods be used with all prior software versions?

Re: [ROOT] Virgin Mobile Security Update Now Rooted!!! Thanks jca

I rooted my phone a couple of months ago and have the overwhelming majority of my applications linked to the second partition of my sd card. I'm pretty satisfied with how my phone is set up. I occasionally use the phone as a hotspot.

Do most of you think it is worthwhile for me to install the security update and reroot the phone? Or should I just leave everything alone and save myself the time and effort?

Re: [ROOT] Virgin Mobile Security Update Now Rooted!!! Thanks jca

I too had my phone rooted and apps linked to a second partition on my sd card then blindly installed the security update without thinking about what it will do with my rooted phone...lets just say that I just created a whole new headache for myself. I can't use any apps that were previously linked to by the Link2SD. All I see for those apps are the com.android....etc. and For some reason I the update left me with out Google Play.

So I'm hoping I can just reroot and all will be restored...but if anyone else has any ideas or similar issues...I'm all ears.

No... Why would you need to update? This update was basically just a root block plus a radio update. If you want the updated radio you can get it here on the forums. There is absolutely no need to update

Re: [ROOT] Virgin Mobile Security Update Now Rooted!!! Thanks jca

after trying to follow your steps, i get stuck at this block:

adb shell rm /data/amit/*
adb shell /data/local/flash_image recovery /data/local/VM670NH_recovery.img
reboot shell reboot recovery

here is the output of the command, followed by my attempt to even get into the shell.
afterwards i saw the problem and just listed the devices to make sure it was still connected.

[null@null Downloads]$ adb shell rm /data/amit/*
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

[null@null Downloads]$ adb shell
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -

[null@null Downloads]$ adb devices
List of devices attached
A0000028E6A3CB recovery

any ideas?

Please post a copy of the entire command window's contents so we can see what is happening. Copy it all and paste it into pastebin.com, then post the pastebin URL here for us to check out.

Well i've spent the past 3 hours trying to learn about how to do this since i depend on my OV and bricking it isn't an option. I was gonna ask what app is good to run for the accelerometer but i'm just being impatient for this 1 click method that might come out. I'll wait, but i'll download the android sdk junk and update it just in case i need it.

Re: [ROOT] Virgin Mobile Security Update Now Rooted!!! Thanks jca

Many, many thanks to jcase and JerryScript. I'm so glad to have root back. I did have to do a factory reset to get it to work, however. Didn't have permissions to do "rm /data/amit/*"

There were two minor typos/discrepancies in part 3 for me also. "adb shell reboot" will not work without su, which we of course don't have. "adb reboot" worked for me. The same goes for the next reboot command, "reboot shell reboot recovery", which also appears to have a typo (first word "reboot" should've been "adb"). "adb reboot recovery" was the command that worked for me. Just wanted to point that out in case anyone was confused with those commands not working.

Now if only there were a fix to restore wifi hotspot capability on the stock rom... The option is still there, just doesn't work.

If you have a Linux computer, there is a one click solution offered in the original xda thread.

I'll try to get a Windows version done soon. ;)

Just wanted to say this process worked easily for me too with just the 2 typos mentioned above. I used adb reboot and adb reboot recovery. Also I think this should be stickied. Only a matter of time before they start shipping phones with the update already on them
