Default Screens: Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One M8

Having read a lot of reviews, the general consensus is that the S5 screen is superior to the M8.While the Samsung screen is clearly more vivid and without question displays better blacks, the thing is - sometimes I feel like when the screen is displaying things like photos they can actually look worse because they are more vivid/saturated than the photo should be, sometimes making things look cartoon like.

I'm not saying that the HTC ONE screen is better, just making some comparisons and observations. I feel like sometimes manufacturers add features which will look good when shown in comparison - for example, when a reviewer or customer is holding both, features which push a sale, rather than actually being a good standalone feature. A brighter, more vivid, more saturated screen has a habit of making another screen look very poor when along side it but in actual usage, not in comparison - I'm not convinced its better.

    What are your thoughts?

Absolutely agree. Over saturation is not accurate and makes everything look fake. I much prefer a more real to life saturation and color reproduction. That's why I have an m8 and not an s5. Different strokes for different folks....

Samsung screens out of the box have their saturation set on mental level.
Probably makes it look better in stores.
If you go into the display settings you can reduce the saturation (Movie, natural etc mode) then the screens are excellent.

The M8 is also a great screen and I have no complaints about it as well.

I agree the saturation levels on S5 screen is extreme, I like the more balanced and natural look of the M8. I also think, at least in my eyes, that the M8 is more viewable in bright sunlight as compared to the S5

I think that most phones these days have excellent screens; so good in fact it's really hard to differentiate. Granted, when side by side one can pick out brighter, darker, etc. But alone they all look pretty damn good. It's a lot like processors, battery, etc. they are all really, really good. Almost like arguing that 301 horsepower is so much better than 300 horsepower.....no one would be able to tell the difference in the real world. I guess the 301HP guy would have some minor bragging rights though.
I digress....I was looking at a friends LG G2 the other day, damn that thing has a nice screen...LOL.

I don't know about if there's such consensus. But I do notice one of the comparisons that was done to show S5's display is superior to competition. But the competition was all last years (2013) model (not a genuine comparison IMO). Then people started broadcasting S5 has the best display. I would say it did have improved over S4 and is quite good now. But still, it's Amold vs LCD3 contest. And in real world practice, S5s screen doesn't do as good as M8s (LCD3) in bright sunlight and it doesn't have as wide view angles either, despite what display/screen one prefers.

And I agree nowadays most phones display is excellent. It bears little sense to say one phone's got the best display (while still lacks in the 2 areas just listed in my last paragraph)

I tested my S4 that I still use along with my new m8. There was no winner in bright daylight. Both are hard to read. The m8 had slightly better whites. The S5 had far better blacks.

Both on max brightness. No winner. Both look just as easy (or hard) to read.

If you dont like the the over saturation switch the screen setting to cinema. Cinema gives a balanced natural screen, it is the best reproduction of colors I have seen on any device.

my M8 is as easy to see in direct sun as in shade. the s4 was/is impossible without trying to tilting the screen for a better angle.
