Does it matter which team you pick in Pokemon Go?

I've been sucked in and now I've reached the point where I must pick a team. Instinct, Mystic or Valor. I have no idea what this means to the game. Can anyone explain to me the differences? Is one better than the other?

No real difference just go out in the map and find a gym. What color is it? I recommend you go with that same team that way you can train at that gym

If you have any friends in real life that play, it's best to join the same team as them so you can go out together and take gyms. You can take a gym yourself, but unless your Pokémon is really strong, it won't last long.
