A5 2017 v6.0.1 white square surrounding app icons

There is a white square around my 'small' app icons, as if the icons aren't big enough so they're sitting in a little white box. Almost all are like this (incl Google apps) except the Samsung native apps and a few others. Is this because the apps haven't optimised for the new system or is there something I can do?
