Default Is there a way to mark mail as read without opening each individual mail item?

When I open the the mail app either from the icon of from notifications I have an option to delete all the mail, but what I would like to do is to mark it as read instead. This way I know what is new mail that I have not seen before but I still have the mail in my in box so I can read it later. Is there ant way to do this without having to open each piece of mail individually?

I tried the Gmail app and it does not have the option either even though I can do it if I log on to my Gmail account on the web.

My Blackberry had that option and I really miss it.
