Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) Best settings to keep the screen from turning off while reading

I get it that the tablet can see your eyes and keep the screen on while you're looking at the screen, but it doesn't work if it is dark. I get tired of that notice at the top of the screen that it can't see my eyes. I also get tired of the screen turning off. On the ipad, it would go dim before it shut off completely, and then you could just touch the screen to keep it on. It seems like this screen always wants to go black while I'm in the middle of using it. I've since increased the screen time out, but wondering if there is a better way

It may depend on what you are doing.
Some apps have independent settings that disable the screen timeout when using them.
