If I root my device, can I get back the "soft" navigation keys?

I hold my Note 10.1 (2014) in portrait mode about 99.9% of the time, and I find myself accidentally hitting the "menu" or "back" keys way too often, since they tend to sit right where my left hand would be gripping the tablet.

I was wondering if I could root my device and disable the hardware keys, and instead just have the "soft" navigation keys that are used on the previous version of the Note 10.1? If I root, will I lose all of the nifty S-Pen features?

Rooting alone won't do anything, the custom ROMs you install are what dictate what you can or can't install. Most ROMs allow you to set the action of the keys to none if you don't want them to do anything.
Same goes for the S-Pen features, that is dependent of the ROM you install
