Hi all,

Am considering buying the wifi version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet but wanted to know if you can tether it to a 3G or 4G mobile phone ? If so is it easy to do ? Feedback would be much appreciated before I purchase wifi version.

Install "Foxfi" on your phone, and "Pdanet for Tablets" on your tablet. You can then tether using bluetooth, wifi, or usb cable. Some phones have an issue with wifi tethering. Some apps(like remote desktop apps) can not use the bluetooth or usb tethering because they can not see a wifi connection being made.
Both are free but you'll need to pay for the unlock one key that unlocks both Foxfi and Pdanet to remove the usage limit. It's well worth the $7.95 if the free version works on your phone.

I will warn you.
U have a friend in at&t and asked him the same question,.
He says that yes there are work arounds but if theur is a spike inservice then they will look in to your data use and will charge you and most cases change your contract to enable tethering

I got my iPhone 3GS brand new in 2009 during the height of the "Unlimited' data plans and it was just starting to change... I quickly Jailbroke and paid for MyFi or whatever and used to tether my ASUS G50VT-X5 a lot. A couple things, I used to like to watch JTV with it. When you tethered and watched JTV I would rack up like a GB of data in a few hours of watching. The week my Grandfather died in like may? 2010? I was at my mothers all week during the day, tethering , I think I did like 9 GB data just by tethering M-F 9ish to 5ish and some decent chunks of JTV streaming.

Now I never got bothered from AT&T for too much Data becasue apparently I used miniscule amounts of data for like 8 months of my contract viA HAving routers at both wortk and home, but then started tethering an used a lot in a short period of time--- BUT--- this was just the beggining of the famous tethering emails/text messages and warning about the 5 GB soft cap.

It was my understanding it was or shall say still is extremely easy for them to figure out if you're tethering and now its all contractual and pay-for-it-basis so on almost all the devices/carriers, if you're tethering and not paying them for it they bust you. I am not really familiar with the latest data plans bec. I got out of it, won't do the pay-for-data-buckets deal, but I think if you tether and not pay them for the data/tethering features they either charge you, suspend you, throttle you, etc. or cut you off, some combination etc. maybe.

I'm confused....
FoxFi and PDAnet are now combined into one app : PDAnet+
Do I need to install the app on both tablet and phone, just the tablet, or just the phone ? Cannot find these basic instructions anywhere.
Thanks !!

You only need PDAnet on your phone. It will set up your hot spot and let you enter a password to protect it. Then you simply locate your hot spot in the wi-fi settings menu, like you would any wi fi service. After you do it the first time the tablet will automatically hook up anytime the hot spot is activated.

One warning; tethering eats up your battery big time. I almost always use my hot spot when the charger is plugged in.

I have a Nexus 4 with T mobile as my service provider. T mobile allows tethering for no extra fee but of course there is a cap on the amount of data usage per month. I have a 2.5 GB per month plan which is fine for email and Web browsing but YouTube can burn through that pretty fast. Not sure what type of phone you'll be tethering to the note but newer generation devices connect pretty quickly, I use mine all the time when on the go.

I tethered my wifi only note to my Verizon GS3 the day I got it. Didn't have to install anything, just enabled mobile hotspot on the GS3, and logged into it on the tablet. I just rarely do that because I only have 1GB to share with my wife, lol.

I have stock HTC Desire and Toshiba AT100 tablet which I tether with the hotspot on the htc. Never had a problem. My wifes Ipad connects to me and I have connected to her Iphone 4 with hotspot. Never a problem.

Thanks so much for posting the info about FoxFi and PdaNet Tablet!

I just got a Note 10.1 and was able to connect it to an ancient HTC Evo Shift 4g using FoxFi on the phone and PdaNet Tablet 2.20 (not PdaNet+) on the tablet. (I was able to get PdaNet Tablet from the Play Store, but had to download the FoxFi installer from PdaNet's web site.)

The phone won't work as a WiFi hotspot but I was able to connect the two using Bluetooth, following these directions:

http://pdanet.co/help/bt/ics.php

The Bluetooth connection worked but unfortunately many apps, as Raymond Tan says above, cannot see the Bluetooth connection because they apparently are only looking for a WiFi connection.

However, the "Internet" app that came with the Note can see the Bluetooth connection (which is a VPN tunnel) and works just fine.

If anyone has a fix for the apps that don't see the Bluetooth connection, please post it here.

Thanks again!
