Default [SPRINT] [GUIDE] How to ROOT and UNROOT The Sprint Note2

How To Root an Unroot The Sprint Galaxy Note2

Android Central and Skunkape60 are not responsible for your phone. This is for the SPRINT Note2 ONLY!! By Using this guide you are assuming all the risks.

Samsung added 2 files that made rooting just different enough to make us change the way we did things. /system/ect/install-recovery.sh & system/recovery-from-boot.p What these 2 files did, caused the phone to look for stock recovery every time the phone was booted. If stock recovery was not found it was re-installed. The TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery -v5. file was created by TeamEpic to not only install superuser and busybox, it also removes those 2 files that Samsung put in. Because of the way those files wipe the custom recovery, The Root From Recovery file must be installed before the 1st boot up. [B}This is why we now have to turn off auto reboot in Odin and pull the battery from the phone.[/B]

Rooting the Sprint Note2 couldn't be easier. Within 10 minutes and a few steps, you could be rooted and on your way. All files required are included in in the root kits.

Your Samsung Drivers MUST be installed correctly on your computer prior to continuing. Wait until the software installs completely before plugging your device into the computer. When you have completed driver installation, plug in your device. The computer should now tell you it is installing drivers, click on the details and wait until there is a green check by all the drivers. Unplugging your device before it's complete will cause you problems...

Attention Windows 8 Users: The drivers included in the root kits are updated to work on Windows 8. If you have upgraded to Windows 8, installed these drivers and they still won't work, you will have to install the drivers in compatibility mode.

    ROOT KITS ARE HERE

Samsung Galaxy Note2 RootKit with TWRP Recovery -

Samsung Galaxy Note2 Rootkit with CWM Recovery -

    Preparing your computer
After downloading the Note2 RootKit to your computer
    1. Copy the Root Kit to your desktop.
    2. double click on the "Rootkit zip" and drag the "rootkit folder" to your desktop.
    Installing Drivers
If you don't have drivers already installed.

    1. Install Samsung Drivers (Included in Root Kit) (Note: Do not have your device plugged in)
    2. After software installation is complete, plug in your device.
    3. Look at the bottom right by the system tray and you should see the new hardware found. Click on details.
    4. Wait until there is a green check mark by all of the drivers. If any of them fail, you will have to start again from the beginning.

    Troubleshooting issues:
    1. Try a different USB Port
    2. Try a different cables. (All cables are not created equal) The stock Samsung cable is often the culprit.
    3. Try redownloading the drivers.

    Preparing your Phone
Open the "Files to put on your phone" folder and copy "TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip" to the internal or external storage.

Phone should be off prior to attempting to go into Download or Recovery Modes.

Download mode is achieved by pressing and holding "volume down, power button and the (physical) home button
simultaneously. You will continue to hold all 3 buttons until you see a warning. Then press the volume up button and you will be in download mode.

Recovery mode is a bit trickier. If you're a second too early or too late, your phone will skip going into recovery and boot normally. If this happens you will have to repeat the Odin process in it's entirety. So unless you are familiar with this, I would give it a few practice runs before starting Odin

Recovery mode is achieved pressing and holding "volume UP, power button and the (physical) home button simultaneously. Watching the screen closely, release all 3 buttons as soon as you see the Samsung screen. If timed correctly it will boot into recovery in about 10-20 seconds (after releasing). Remember if you are too early or late the phone will boot normally and skip recovery.

DO NOT LET THE PHONE BOOT AFTER FLASHING RECOVERY IN ODIN... IF YOUR PHONE BOOTS BEFORE FLASHING TEAM EPIC ROOT FROM RECOVERY IN CWM, CUSTOM RECOVERY WILL NOT STICK AND YOU WILL HAVE TO START OVER.

    Using Odin

    1. Open the "Odin307" folder and right click on "Odin3 v3.07.exe" and choose run as administrator. Odin will open.
    2. Remove battery cover from phone for future access
    3. Place your phone into download mode. See above Download note.
    4. Plug your usb cord to your phone and computer and wait until you see any number and com in the com block
    5. Click on the PDA button and browse to "recovery.tar.md5" in your Root Note2 Folder.
    6. Verify that both Auto Reboot and F. Rest Time are UNCHECKED.

When all this is done Odin should look like this:

    7. If everything is like the picture above click on the start button. It should move very quickly as recovery is a small file. It is normally completed within 10-20 seconds (depending on the speed of your computer and usb port).

This is what Odin should look like when complete.

Sometimes Odin will not show "PASS!" in the top left corner. So observe the message window as well. If it shows "All Threads completed (Succeed 1 /
Failed 0) you should be fine. It can also be disconnected at reset

    8. Remove Battery and disconnect phone from computer.

    Flashing Root in CWM Recovery
    1. Install battery
    2. Place your phone into Recovery Mode. See above Recovery note.
The Recovery that you installed is a touch screen recovery. You will not need use the buttons to navigate through the recovery menus.
    3. Once in recovery tap on "install zip from sdcard".
    4. Now you will tap either "choose zip from sdcard" or "choose zip from internal sdcard"
    5. Scroll by swiping up and down on screen. Tap on "TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip.
    6. Tap on "- Yes - Install TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery -v5.
Once complete, tap the "go back" button once and then the "reboot system now" button.

    Flashing Root in TWRP Recovery
    1. Install battery
    2. Place your phone into Recovery Mode. See above Recovery note.
The Recovery that you installed is a touch screen recovery. You will not need use the buttons to navigate through the recovery menus.
    3. Once in recovery tap on "install".
    4. Choose either "Use external SD" or "Use internal storage" button.
    5. browse to "TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip and tap it.
    6. Swipe the "Confirm to flash" button to the right.
Once complete, tap the "reboot system" button.

You Are now fully rooted with custom recovery installed.
How to ROOT the Galaxy Note2
If you are unrooting to take your phone to Sprint, you will want to clear your flash counts first. If this is not required you can skip this step.

Always check your current count state in download mode prior to using triangle away. If what Triangle Away and what is shown in download mode doesn't match, do not proceed.

You will be will be resetting your phone with an app called triangle away, which has been updated to support the Sprint Note2. Click on the link below to download triangle away.

    Triangle Away -
    Please thank

Installation instructions and how to use it are in QBKING77's Video Below. While the video is of the Galaxy S3, the steps and methods are identical.

Here's a one file one flash method to return to stock. This will return your Sprint Note2 to a stock unrooted state. While you will need your drivers and Odin desktop loaded, you will only be flashing a single file to your phone.

Attention Windows 8 Users: The drivers below are updated to work on Windows 8. If you have upgraded to Windows 8, installed these drivers and they still won't work, you will have to install the drivers in compatibility mode.

Download and install on your computer.

    Preparing Your Computer

You will need to download the following files to your desktop or notebook computer. Just click on the file names and that should download the file required. I would suggest you make a folder on your desktop and name it something like Unroot Note2

    Return to Stock L900VPALJ1

After downloading the above files to your computer:
    1. double click on the "Odin 3.07 zip". Copy the "Odin307" folder into your "UnRoot Note2" folder.
2 Copy "KIES_HOME_L900VPALJ1_L900SPTALJ1_265523_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5" To your Unroot "Note2" folder.

    Using Odin

    1. Open the "Odin307" folder and right click on "Odin3 v3.07.exe" and choose run as administrator. Odin will open.
    2. place your phone into download mode by turning off phone - Once the phone shuts down, press and hold volume down, home button and power button at the same time. When you see the warning push the volume up button to continue.
    3. Plug your usb cord to your phone and computer and wait until you see any number and com in the com id block
    4. Check the PDA block and click on the pda button to browse to " KIES_HOME_L900VPALJ1_L900SPTALJ1_265523_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5" in your "UnRoot Note2" Folder.
    5. Verify Auto Reboot is checked as well as F. Reset Time.

When all this is setup Odin should look like this:

    6. If everything looks like the picture, click on the start button in Odin.

Note: This is vary large file and make take up to 10 minutes to complete.

When the phone leaves download mod and starts to reboot you can remove the usb cord.

There are a couple other ways to easily root your Galaxy Note 2:

LJC Odin One Clicks - Stock & Rooted:

LK8 Odin One Clicks - Adding Later Today!

Chainfire's Exynos Abuse App (Confirmed through LK8):

You can also use the LJC One Clicks to Unroot - just choose the Stock variety!

PC Trick: The key methods mentioned by SkunkApe60 are often a pain so I recommend those with a PC to do something else:

    1) Install the Android SDK and add it to your path. It's been written up very well here amongst many other locations:

    2) Turn on Developer Options and USB Debugging on your phone.

Now instead of the key methods you can type two commands to get to download and recovery:
    Code:
    adb reboot download
    adb reboot recovery
So when I root to make the one clicks I do the following steps:
    1) Download TWRP in an Odin package here:

(I link here so that you can thank the developer supporting this for the GN2 while you're there.)

    2) Reboot to Download (Odin) mode using the ADB command above.
    3) Load the TWRP Odin package in the PDA slot and flash. Reboot to system.

Note: In only one case have I seen it not hold TWRP and that was after the LK8 test OTA.
Every other case recovery has held and you can let it boot normally.

    4) Download this file:

...and place it on your internal memory or SD card.
    5) Reboot to recovery using the ADB command above.

    6) Flash subusybox.zip and reboot to System.

Congrats! You're now rooted using the same method as the one clicks!

I find adb and fastboot a bigger pain. Don't see the 3 finger salute as being more difficult. I find it much easier than working in a dos prompt.

If you add it to the path just Start->Run and enter it in. Could be even more lazy and make a shortcut for it.
Works great, especially for that Recovery one since I haven't...been...able... dang it! Missed again!

I personally just downloaded the root toolkit, which works for every carrier, and went from there...

And did all the work for me

Didn't really have to mess with anything but put a file in Odin when it told me to.

I really don't agree with one clicks or auto rooting. If people can't follow these instructions and flash one file in odin and one file in recovery, perhaps they shouldn't be rooted. I truly feel that by doing things yourself you learn more and in the long run get more enjoyment out of your tinkering.

I guess another way to put it is...

One clicks or other auto rooting techniques is fine but we/you can't always know or anticipate the outcome due to limited control of the process.

Manual methods of rooting you have much more control over what is happening. In the end many find it more rewarding.

You said it better than I. I just find doing things myself more satisfying. I've learned allot in the past year and and a half and am still learning. I've found playing with these phones a cheap and interesting hobby. The deeper into the rabbit hole I go the more satisfying it is.

I wish I had more time for this but working full time and being a single father takes most of my time. I'm currently trying to get my favorite gs3 theme working on the gn2. Once I get this figured out and working, I will try my own theme. Who knows what's after that.

Will these methods work with the new MA7 update? I'm stock rooted so I was just going to revert back to unroot update then root back.
Is this do able? Will anything be lost?

This method doesn't flash a Rom tar. So it can be used regardless of android version. So yes it will work on ma7. I have rooted many times with this method and have yet to lose data. The return to stock should also work without losing data.

I can guarantee the root won't lose data but can't promise that the return to stock won't. However the one time I did it, I didn't lose anything.

The old epic touch was sort of like that. But the Note2 stores it's recovery in its own partition. You can flash all the roms and kernels and your recovery will remain just the way it is.
