Messaging between iOS and android
I am going to get my Note 2 this week and the one thing I want to make sure I can still do is message my kids iPods. I'm thinking that I will just use google+ but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. Thanks.

Google+, FB Messenger, or Skype.

Check out the third party free text messaging apps. Some have ported apps for Android and apple that enable you to message each other over wifi or data. Hope this helps

Messaging between iOS and android
They are young so I want something secure. They don't have Facebook but I set them up with Google email and they don't even use that. I figured Google+ might me the easiest to do. I just want an easy way for them to message me when I'm at the office or whatever. I saw a few of the other messaging apps out there but I'm hesitant to sign them up for something else without knowing how secure it is.

Skype would be good because you can even do voice calls. Skype to Skype calls and IMs are free. The only thing is I have no clue about parental controls if you don't want them to be able to do video chat. I know you can turn off video calls and calls from all but your contacts, but I'm not sure how to lock that setting down.

I did think about Skype too. I wasn't sure how good the chat service is. I think I will give it a try.

It runs well on the Note 2 and the Windows 8 app is pretty good as well. I like the IM and the ability to send files, but I can't tell you about voice calls because I've never used that feature. I know Skype to Skype calls are free, but you can have to a Premium account or Skype Credit to make Skype to Mobile or Skype to Landline calls.
For Privacy, I wouldn't recommend Facebook Messenger even though you already ruled that out. I have my Facebook chat set to be always offline, I don't like it at all.
Google+ might be good too. You can try and see which you like best.

Try using Google Talk.

There is an iOS app called VTok. I use it to communicate with my daughter when I travel. It will let you text or video conference, essentially Facetime. Oh the N2 you would use Google Talk.

Whatsapp won't work on ipod since they required cell number to text the confirmation number

Kik messenger... Works very nice!
Re: Messaging between iOS and android
I set my daughter up with a Google voice number and use the Google voice app on her iPod touch. This allows her to text my wife and I as well as her grandparent's and a few select friends. Been using it for over a year and it has worked out quite well.
