Galaxy Note 2 - No Speaker??

I own a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-i317m). It has worked flawlessly for a year. 4 months ago it stopped emitting sounds from the external speaker AND the headphone jack makes a crackling / popping sound.

I can still communicate during phone calls when i hold the phone to my head but i can never hear the incoming call ringing noise nor can i hear any notification sounds.

I took the phone in to the repair guys and after 1 week they gave up unable to figure out why the phone refuses to emit sounds from the speakers.

I originally had a rooted firmware but recently unrooted the device back to stock. The problem persists.

Any ideas on how to restore my speaker sound would be greatly appreciated. My current stock firmware is 4.1.1

Welcome to Android Central! I would've thought the external speaker had failed. Did the repair shop somehow test the speaker? I wonder why they didn't try to replace it.
