I get all this, but whenever I select any emoji, it shows as a regular whatsapp emoticon..Why is that?

WhatsApp renders emoji using their own built-in emoji font in their app. Other apps may do the same. It's what Hangouts does on pre-Kit Kat devices as well as Facebook Messenger on devices that don't support emoji.

The emoji are nice, but I'm not turning off voice typing and burying them so deep even in messaging apps means I hardly ever use them. It's just too much work to get to them.

Also I noticed the MMS issue which forbids you to send a message with one while you're on the phone (Verizon) and makes the message take forever to send when you have a bad signal.
