Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - USB connection excruciatingly slow and unreliable

Ever since day one of getting the Note 3, I've been having problems with the USB connection. It doesn't matter if I turn on the USB 3.0 in the settings or use the MTP, to navigate the folders on the Note 3 from the computer (using Windows Explorer) is painfully slow. Clicking on a folder would take several seconds for the contents of the folder to even show up, and transferring files is also ridiculously slow. It doesn't matter if I'm plugged into a USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port--the result is the same. It's only when I switch to the PTP connection that the connection is fast, but in that mode, the Note 3 is only recognized as a camera and cannot see or transfer other file types.

Also, often Note 3 is not even recognized and I have to unplug and re-plug it back in. Again, in PTP mode it's more reliable.

I'm at my wit's end and don't know if there is a secret setting somewhere that can fix this. Please help if you know anything. Thanks.
