In my endless quest to tweak my GN3 I recently decided to look into how much I could eliminate the need to use the physical home button. My home button doesn't seem loose but I do have to wonder how well it will hold up in the long run being clicked 100+ times a day (I - like a few others here - do suffer from N3OCD and am constantly messing with my new phone!). I think some of the other custom launchers might do similar things, but for the time being I'm sticking to TouchWiz and saving the exploration of the custom launchers for a later time when I get bored with it.

Here are a few cool apps that you might want to check out to reduce or eliminate the need to use your home button:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....smartscreenon (Smart Screen On - wake up the phone using the proximity sensor)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ttonfree&hl=en (Swipe Home Button - as the name implies, use swipe gestures to replace the home function an much more)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....switchr&hl=en (Switchr - this one is my new favorite - swipe from the side to switch between recent apps)

Anyone else come across similar apps?

I know Tasker can be set up to wake up with the proximity sensor as well
Haven't had any issues with my S4 after almost 6 months though

I've been using a Droid Maxx so I have Active Display to turn the screen on. This eliminated the need for a power button or in Samsung case a home button for that. The rest I haven't tried but I'm going to pass on to a friend because he's been looking to do this.

Interesting idea. But I think the physical home button wearing out/getting damaged is why onscreen keys are becoming more common.

Possibly. I do know with the size of the Note that on screen buttons would be nice. Heck you could have more screen real estate (or at least the feeling of more)

That...and smaller bezels allow for bigger displays

I use swipepad and I never have to hit the home button to get any of my apps. I also have no apps on home screen when using swipepad. I hate the look of cluttered home screens with apps all over the place.
