Why is Android system taking so much battery?

It is using 18% of my battery and my phone has been off charger for 11 hours and 71% left with a hour of screen time. This is after reformatting SD card and a factory reset

18% actually sounds pretty normal to me. OS and System are often around 15-20%, if the screen hasn't been on much.

If Android system seems to be taking up a large amount of battery then factory reset the device. I recently had issues with my Note 3 burning through battery while doing nothing(Android system using way more then the display) and the reset fixed it completely.

I would but can't be bothered to get all my music back and don't want to lose my pics and videos

I already factory reset my device after I did the recent update for voice over LTE for T-Mobile version.


18% doesn't sound like enough but before it would be around 10% in my same usage with 4.4.2. With 4.3 it would be around 8%

Store them in the cloud or on a pc so they can easily be put back on your phone. I put all my photos and files in Google Drive before the reset.

IMO Samsung account sync is best for Samsung notes scrapbook etc. When reset it will ask you for your Samsung account first.
Dropbox is very good. All my music and photos/screenshots dragged to a pc. Google sync for me just for contacts, apps.
There is going to be a little pain the first time, but it's worth resetting so you know what method works the next time.

It's the phone using the battery, being simplistic about it. You have 80% left for the screen and yourself.

It was not that high before kit Kat, so what changed on kit Kat to cause the os to use noticeably more battery.

And note on factory reset, I did that and the os still uses extra battery.

I think it is more of how the battery usage is reported. I get about the same battery life before and after KitKat.
