why can't i update software on my galaxy note 3

[AC Question]

My galaxy note 3 is showing no updates in the history, yet it also says it is up to date on updates.
I also have 13 voicemails that i have been unable to access even though i have followed every instruction given by straight-talk, samsung, and verizon...not to mention that the vm count will change from 8 to 12 or 13 countless times before my eyes continuously at different intervals

Welcome to Android Central! Are you talking about system updates, or app updates?

You can typically call your voicemail from another phone -- have you tried that to see if you actually have new voicemails, or if the phone might be falsely reporting new voicemails to you?
