Assuming you are in the US, if you enter the standard 10 digits it will format to xxx-xxx-xxxx when you save the contact. If you enter less than 10 digits, it won't format automatically. It's still waiting for the remaining digits. If you add more than 10 (1-xxx-xxx-xxxx) it doesn't format that either.
