2K gaming slower than 1080p?

I wouldn't call the note 4 gaming experience laggy by any means, but games like spider man unlimited, asphalt 8, dead trigger 2, modern combat 5 and into the dead all seem to run at 30 fps, where as on less powerful 1080p handsets like the note 3 they can get 60fps.

Is there anyway to run games at 1080p without rooting your phone, and does it bother anyone else? :)

I think they're running 2K on the note 4 and 1080p on the note 3. You can tell because of the sharpness in image quality and lower frame rate.

What else would explain the note 3 running at a higher frame rate than the note 4 other than a resolution upgrade?

Okay, I just tested Asphalt 8 on both a Note 10.1 and a Note 4...both are upscaling from (at a guess) something akin to 900p. On the tablet...its scaling HP to 2500*1600, and the note 4 2048*1440. At a guess why native isn't 1080p render target, as you'd expect...I suspect the lower rendering resolution is necessary to accommodate on screen navigation buttons on many devices. Upscazling takes horsepower, and there is 2x(ish). AA solution applied, which I don't see on my Nexus7, that could also account for the minor drop in performance.

The higher in resolution you run a game and it doesn't matter what type of device you are using, the slower it will be. Basically you are asking the cpu and gpu to do more work the higher you go. So don't expect anything running at 2k to be as fast as something running at 1080p. It doesn't work that way on a desktop, definitely not going to work that way on a phone.
