Assigned notification ringtones not sticking

I have a Samsung Note 4. I have updated the notification default tone, however when I receive messages etc, it is still the old sound.
Why won't this update?

Open the app you are trying to assign a custom ringtone to. For example, if it's the messaging app you want to open that particular app and go into menu > settings > notifications. Select the appropriate ringtone. You can do this for email, voice mail, incoming calls, etc. If this is still an issue you can try downloading an app to assign the ringtone (sometimes that'll work if manually setting it doesn't).
