How to backup?

I see lollipop is next up for at&t. Before I update how do I back up to be able to factory reset after update? I am not rooted.

You can use Kies or back up to any cloud app. Kies sucks but it gets the job done.

Is it necessary to reset the phone after an update? I've never had a major update on an android phone before so what is the best way to go about it?

If your phone is working fine then no reason to reset

Can you please post a screen shot of Kies icon/app......I know I had it years ago on another phone/computer, but I don't find actual "kies" in google play.
