Message app lag

I use the stock samsung messaging app. When using Priority Senders, and if I assign a picture of a contact it creates a 5 second lag when opening the messaging app. Pictures are stored on the device. Have also tried storing them on the SD card, same problem. No lag when no picture assigned. Anyone else experience this?
