Emoji Problem. Help!

I seem to have an issue with emojis. Many a times the emojis I receive are not displayed, they are shown as "vertical rectangles" and sometimes with a cross in it.
This happens with the emojis I receive, occurs quite frequently.
This happens all across the os, Browser, messaging apps, default SMS app.
Does this happen with anyone else or just a device thing?
Any help or solution to this?

This us the only time I have the issue. My wife has iPhone and I get weird shapes from her constantly.

Mine is auto. Only get the weird emoji from iPhones. Everyone else is fine for me.

Yes, it is set to Automatic in my messaging settings.

Any solution to this problem? Anyone?

I'm not having that issue, emojis come in correctly for me from iPhone users.

This is not only the case when I receive emojis from iPhones it also happens by my own phones emojis.
I set a few emojis as a group subject on whatsapp and whenever I receive messages on that group my notification bar shows a few emojis as "blocks"

You might want to email Whatsapp support, that might be an issue on their end.

The blocks with the X's in them are most likely from the iPhones sending the new emojis that aren't on Android yet such as the taco, burrito, middle finger, etc. The blocks in the first pic I would think are from the person sending the fists and crying faces in a different color than the regular emoji which is also an iPhone feature.

If there are any squares or squares with X in them they are emoji that your phones does not recognize. It usually happens with iPhone because they have certain emoji we don't such as different skin colors.

I find that my selection of available emoji changes from time to time. Sometimes I vertically scroll through and others I'm scrolling horizontally. In the second scenario there are more emoji available.
