Re: any way to work around kies for the ics update
I was having the same problem. My phone wouldnt be recognized after i did the ICS leak. so i dowloaded odin v1.85. Then I went to Sammobile and downloaded the original 2.3.5 tar file (make sure its the ATT not the Rogers version. Went through odin. Once it was complete then i let the phone set its self up. Then I upgraded to 2.3.6 over the air. Then I plugged into Kies and that's how I managed to upgrade. I really hope this works or you have already figured it out.

Re: any way to work around kies for the ics update
I cant get the dang kies application to work, my phone is recognised but then the app neeed to update and it doesnt actually update, infinitly looping trying to update, so on one computer I tried removing kies which is nearly impossible because even with all the work ive done when I try to install the,new one it acts as if the old one is still there and endlessly loops. One computer is vista 64 the other vista 32, might get a chance to try on 7 computer wednesday

Mine upgraded fine from stock 2.3.5, it wouldnt do it from 2.3.6.
Also you must be stock 100%. It wont upgrade from a leak. And if windows 7 64b gives you problems, you can run kies as administrator. I did not have any issues with my pc running W7 64bit.

64-bit or 32-bit of any Windows OS doesn't have any affect on the upgrade process. Kies is a feisty program that has a mind of it's own.

Re: any way to work around kies for the ics update
I couldn't get it to work on a 32-bit XP machine or 64-bit WIn7 Machine. But Odin worked fine. Now running 4.0.4. I'm less impressed with the Launchers. They seem laggy. I'm using Apex, might try Nova. Does GoLauncher work with ICS?
