The battery on my Samsung GS2 runs down surprisingly quickly.
I see in Home=>Settings=>About phone=>Battery usage
that a number of applications that I have been using
but are not using at present, eg Skype,
are listed as contributing significantly to battery usage.

How exactly can I stop an application
without removing it?

Press the home button, Task manager,active applications. Then hit exit beside the application.

If you are updated to ICS, the steps are a little different....

You bring up the 'Recents' panel by long pressing the Home button. From the list of recent application thumbnails, swipe left/right on the application that you want to remove from the background. This will stop the application without removing it.
