Saving documents offline?

A

AC Question

saving documents offline

I want to work and save documents (Eg Word & Excel) when off-line. I'm thinking of buying a Samsung S2 and installing Polaris Office (or other recommended app) to replace my Windows notebook when travelling. I can't rely on an internet connection to create and save docs when travelling.
I posed the Question to PO but they havent responded. Has anyone use PO offline, or can recommend an alternative?

Re: saving documents offline

Polaris office is simply an office suite. It's meant to be worked off-line just like Microsoft office is. You don't need internet to use PO. Maybe I'm not understanding your concerns?

Re: saving documents offline

You do understand my concern. The question was prompted by Samsung confirming that the Word, Excel, & PP aps can only be accessed when online with the S2 tablet. Polaris Office rates highly on Play Store but nowhere on their site does it state that documents can be accessed/saved offline. A question directed to PO 3 days ago hasn't been answered but I needed to purchase the tablet ASAP. Hence the "saving" question to the Forum.
Thanks for the quick response.

Re: saving documents offline

I tried Microsoft office (installed from Playstore) a while ago on my Note 4, and Microsoft itself forces you to create an account and sign in to use it via internet. I was able to save documents locally on my phone with it though. However, I didn't like the part about having to sign in every single time just to use it... so it's now uninstalled.

Polaris Office 5 came pre-installed on my Note 10.1 (2014) tablet. Unlike MSO, I don't have to sign in to use it, so I can use it without any internet. I can create and save documents with it but since it's the free version, I don't really know if it's a "limited version". It's all I've needed so far but I've only created a few documents. I can read any MS document, Word, Excel, PP. It can also read PDFs and create PDFs from MSO documents.

Anyways, I've just read in a review that the S2 comes with a MS Office suite. You'll probably need to create an account with Microsoft to use it and sign in every time. Try it anyways and see how it goes. I think PO offers a free version too that you can try.

I actually like PO on my tablet, but I don't use it the way you plan to use it. I only create important documents on my laptops or desktop computers... much easier for me.

Re: saving documents offline

Thanks Nahoku. As PO meets the off-line criteria I'll buy the S2 this afternoon. Although Samsung's formal response on saving docs with the installed MS suite was that it required the internet , I visited a store this morning to confirm. The Salesman demonstrated that there was an option to "save to device" (though it did have a wi-fi connection at the time). Would have bought the S2 then but they had no new stock. Regardless, as PO works offline, it won't be a problem.
The documents aren't that critical but I'll be backing up to a USB memory stick anyway. However the weight of the notebook, its charger, its relatively short battery life and lack of mains power at some locations just make the tablet a more attractive device in the circumstances.
Thanks again,
DD

This is the main reason I own my Note 10.1. I used to carry my Thinkpad 12" back and forth to the mainland (I'm in Hawaii) and because the battery is getting old, it didn't do too well for the 5 hour flight. I decided on a tablet just so my Mom would be able to watch movies to avert boredom (I escort her to Vegas because of her age nowadays). Amazing that for years I used to lug the charger, plugs/cables, and spare batteries, not to mention the hassles of pulling the laptop out for TSA. Big pain! I guess people buy things for many different reasons.

Good luck with PO! Try before you buy. MS might suit your needs in the end.

Re: saving documents offline

Wanted to mention one more thing... Amazon Underground has Polaris Office for free. I've never used AU, but might try it to see if an upgrade to my PO version 5 is possible.
