why does my t-mobile galaxy sit say no firmware?

It is running android 4.0, and I hear there are updates, but if I try it says no firmware

Welcome to Android Central! The latest version looks like 4.1.2: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/sgh-t989/SGH-T989/. In order to get a system update, a carrier-specific phone has to be on that carrier's network -- so if you're not on T-Mobile, it won't get the update. That phone is ancient, and even if you do use it on T-Mobile, I'm not sure if the servers would even bother to update the phone. But you could always try.
