Galaxy S3 Mini - wifi hotspot connection problems

both my wife and I have Samsung Galaxy 3 minis and we both have the same issue with many(not all) wifi hotspots. Most of these hotspots need a password(which I can obtain, hotels for example) but I cannot connect as the wifi on the phone says the connection is open and therefore does not give an option to put a password in. Other people connect with their laptops and mobile devices by using the password so my question is: how do I configure the phone to know that a password is required and the connection is not open.
