Used Space Considerably Higher Than Storage Space.

Hi There,

I tried to download an app today and my phone said I had insufficient storage space (although it was taking pictures fine earlier in the day). I checked out my device storage and apparently I have:
8gb total device capacity;
2.87gb required to run the system;
11.80gb used space;
32.36mb cached data;
1.23gb available space.

Used space is split as follows:
1.7gb apps;
9.94gb pictures;
33.6mb downloads.

I have over 10,000 pictures on my phone as well as some videos so I can see where this figure would come from... but how could an 8gb phone store 11.8gb pictures/videos/apps? And if I want to download the application I tried to download earlier, do I have to remove 3gb+ pictures before I can do this?

I'm also having problems backing up my pictures to my laptop (could only see 1800 pictures when viewing on laptop yesterday, even though my camera has 6376 according to gallery when looking on my phone (and 2629 pictures from a camera app too, none of which showed up when viewing on laptop).

I would really appreciate any help anyone can give.
