Default Official wireless charging battery cover to be thicker?

Now this is just pure speculation right now, but do you think the battery cover coming out sometime in September to enable wireless charging is going to be thicker then the current battery cover?

Personally, I think it will have to be thicker to house the coil, connection pins and microchip. The reason I ask though is it seems like they are going to make us choose if we want wireless charging or a case. I'm sure some manufacturers will come out with cases to fit the thicker battery door but I'm also sure some won't.

Again, pure speculation, just wanted to see what others thought.

My guess would be yes. But then againg they could pull it off

Well here's that these coils can be made a little thinner than the one's in the Palm Pre. So maybe Samsung can pull this off.

Curious how you are able to give such a definitive answer? I am certainly hoping the same.

How did you get a wireless charging back cover? Would love to see some pics of both sides of it. Do you have the wireless charging pad as well?

Someone made one using the stock battery cover I think. So it is possible, but it will probably be a few mm thicker.

Available now from Verizon Corporate Store for $39.00. Stock Verizon Charging Matt $49.00 or $20.00 from Ebay. The backplate is slightly thicker and much more firm. Sorry for the rushed pics, just wanted to get them online. The color of the back plate is pebble blue, however the color is slightly richer than the stock backplate. Cases are going to be a problem. My kickstand case from Verizon will not fit at all. The Cruiser case in the photo is a gel slip-on, but the slight bulge makes the edges slip-off the sides with not much effort.

So what is the extra piece/contacts (the part over where the SIM and SD cards are) for, that are Verizon specific? Could it be related to NFC? I wonder if there will be another Samsung battery cover that omits that part, for all of the other phone variants?

The NFC is located closer to the camera. The contacts that you are referring to are Verizon exclusive and is supposed to be compatable with their accessories.

    Some more pics here.

I wish someone made a back that would work with the touchstone.

Maybe I'm missing something but what is the point of the wireless charging pad? My "assumption" is that the wireless charging pad has to be plugged in somewhere. If that's true then why not just plug in the phone charger? I'm guessing the wireless charger is good so if you put the phone down somewhere it's charging and then you can pick it up and walk around with it (then putting it back on the charger when done walking)?

I think the pluses are convenience, and not plugging/unplugging from the micro-usb port 20 times a day, thus reducing "wear and tear" on the recptacle. I know its supposed to last for thousands or tens of thousands of plugging/unplugging cycles, but I just cant help but think I am wearing out the connector when I do so. But convenience is also a big seller for me, just set it down as I walk by, and not give it a second thought. I think I will wait until there is a more economical version/alternative though.

I bought the verizon branded wireless charger and battery cover, today. The cover is definitely slightly thicker. After installing it, my hard case will not fit, at all, and my TPU case bulges around the middle of the phone.

As an FYI, it does not work with a Palm Touchstone, either. The Palm battery covers had a magnet in them that would hold the phone steady on the Touchstone. The Samsung battery cover is not magnetic, at all.

So it doesn't hold on for a charge? What if you hold it steady over the touchstone? I does it charge? It's really a $6 dollar solution to place magnets there.

    Thanks!

I did hold the GS3 up against the Touchstone and varied the contact area between the Touchstone and the phone to see if I could pick up a charge, but nothing worked.

The Verizon version is their version of powermat from my understanding. It is different from what Samsung described as wireless charging as with Verizon'a kit, there must be contact between the phone and pad. Whereas Sammy's description is you can pick up the phone and be within a few inches or so from the mat and use the phone and it will still continue to charge.

From what I've read for the S3 the battery holds the NFC chip. Whereas compared to my Bold 9900 there are contacts which touch the backdoor and the backdoor acts as an extended NFC chip.
