How does encryption work on the S III?

I've never used the encryption feature on any of my Android phones. I was scanning the net for comments about its functionality, but I couldn't find anything that answered my questions.

Anyone here have their phone and/or MicroSD encrypted?

- How exactly is the data encrypted? Can I still access the content via USB?
- Is there a hit in performance because the data is encrypted?
- Is the data encryption disabled after entering in the code? How long does this process take?
- If I also encrypt the MicroSD card, does that mean it's not readable on a computer with an SD or USB adapter?

I'm especially curious after reading this article a few months ago. The FBI couldn't crack a pimp's (yes, a pimp) pattern lock phone and had to inlist Goggle's help. I don't know if they were ever able to gain access. http://www.pcworld.com/article/251906/android_pattern_lock_stumps_fbi.html

Any feedback would be appreciated. :)
