SD card problem with the S3
I recently bought a 32GB Samsung Class 10 microSD card. I put it into the phone and I get this notification: "SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem".
I know for a fact that the card works - checked it on a PC and a friend's blackberry and works just fine. I have reformatted the card numerous times (to every possible filesystem) on the phone and a PC and still get this error.
I also tried putting in my friend's Sandisk microSD card in and the GS3 gave me the same message. At this point I think it's the phone but I'm past my 30 day exchange period with ATT. Any suggestions to fix this problem?

Try using a SanDisk MicroSDHC card...you could return the Samsung one and try that, its the one I am using now
Also just for trying sake, you can try putting it in and formatting it from the phone

Re: SD card problem with the S3

Re: SD card problem with the S3
p.s, op, the s3 has a habit of "frying" sd cards but samsung wont take any responsibility if theyre not samsung branded.
would be kinda funny (not at your expense) if samsung cards dont work in it lol ;)

See my post, tried a Sandisk one, the phone would not mount it properly.

I know for a fact the card is not fried, it works just fine in other devices and I can go back and forth between the phone and the PC, the phone gives me the error each time though. Is there some software fix or do I need to get a new phone (really don't want to do that)? I won't be able to visit an ATT store till the weekend anyways.

Re: SD card problem with the S3
Interesting note about the S3 being in the habit of frying cards, I'm glad I paid the extra $4 for 3 year in-store replacement warranty. I'm currently using a Patriot Class 10, and seems to be holding up well for the last 2 weeks I've had it.

Yeah that's weird...I'm sure if you show it to AT&T they should be able to do something

Re: SD card problem with the S3
Same thing happened to me once. I tried to access the sd card on my phone and it froze. After a few seconds it said 'blank sd card'. I took it out and checked it on my laptop and it worked just fine there. When I put it back into my S3, everything was back to normal. Weird :|.

Re: SD card problem with the S3
I had a sandisk class 10 micro sd card. Got fried in S3 International. Called sandisk and they told me, all s3's have problems with class 10 cards. They replaced it with a new one. Just got it. But haven't tried it yet. Samsung should come out with a patch for class 10 cards. Hope JB fixes it.

Re: SD card problem with the S3
Yes the real issue is class 10. I just changed from a class 6 to a class 10 and this is when all my problems started. I do not recommend class 10 cards in the S3.

Re: SD card problem with the S3
a high end phone that cant handle high end flash memory lol!
samsung should have put a non-universal sd slot on the s3 for their own cards that DO work lol. its rediculous them saying they wont replace cards from other manufacturers when its an industry standard..

Re: SD card problem with the S3
I've a S3 having the same problem after changing my SD card to SanDisk 16G class 10. Tried to find a solution from various forums but no luck. Eventually I found my problem was caused by the mechanical spring device in the SD card adapter. There are 2 fine spring mechanisms in the card adapter which are required to hold the SD card in its proper position. These mechanisms would have been forced into a wrong position during changing of the new card. The card was then not connecting to the phone properly. I used a fine needle to ***** these spring mechanisms back to their correct position. I hope my solution is help to some of you.

Re: SD card problem with the S3
Hi everyone, I've had so much problems concerning the SD cards on my samsung s3 that I finally chatted with a samsung rep. This is the conversation. Note: samsung has not received any complaints concerning this problem.
Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Stewart'. There will be a brief survey at the end of our chat to share feedback on my performance today.
Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK56402256130X
Stewart: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Stewart: Not to rush you, are we still connected on the chat?
Visitor: Having alot of problems with sd card. Ive tried 8, 16 and 32 gb cards and the phone says card unexpectedly remove, corrupt etc. All of the sd cards have been checked for any sector problems. So whats happening? I also realize i'm not alone in this problem there are many others who are really upset by this.
Stewart: I am sorry to hear that.
Stewart: I am sorry there is no such reported issues at our end.
Stewart: I understand that you have an issue in the device in reading the SD card. Is that correct?
Visitor: There are dozens of forums concerning this.
Stewart: I understand your concern.
Visitor: Just type in on google and youll see this .
Visitor: I've purchased two S3....
Stewart: I am sorry, we do not have an access to third party websites.
Stewart: Okay.
Stewart: Please let me know whether you have the same issue with both the devices.
Visitor: Yes, as well as other people. Aside from third parties, I understand that apps can no longer be placed on the sd card but what I dont understand is why others as well as I are having these problems.
Stewart: Only the downloaded application with above 1GB size can be moved to the SD card in S3.
Visitor: internal sd card
Visitor: Samsung has created an internal sd card to place apps.
Visitor: You can only place vids, pics, music to an external sd card which has problems.
Stewart: Yes, Samsung S3 has Internal SD card.
Stewart: The applications are saved in the internal SD card.
Stewart: the downloaded application with above 1GB size can be moved to the Ext.SD card in S3.
Visitor: How can this be done with the problems happening on the external card? as for apps, I've installed apps larger than 1gb and it still is placed on the int sd card.
Visitor: doesnt make sense.
Stewart: There is an option to move the application from SD card to Ext.SD card in your device if the application is larger than 1GB.
Visitor: where?
Stewart: I will provide you with the steps.
Stewart: From home screen tap on Apps>>Settings>>Application manager>>Downloaded>>tap on the application you are referring to and select the 'Move to Ext.SD card' option.
Visitor: My phone on any sd card inserted has issues of preparing the sd card Even when I set the camera to save on sd card, I'll take a picture and it will say cannot write file to ext sd card.
Stewart: I am sorry to hear that.
Stewart: Please try to format the SD card and check with the result.
Visitor: have done so. Even through dos chkdisk. Formatted through phone, formatted as fat32, exfat...
Stewart: May I know the current firmware version in your device?
Visitor: Believe me, i'm not the only one with these issues....
Visitor: Yes...hold on...
Stewart: I do understand your concern.
Stewart: Please tap on Applications >> Settings >> About Phone >> Firmware/Android Version.
Visitor: 4.1.1.
Stewart: Thank you.
Stewart: As per the information I have checked the pictures should be saved in the Ext.SD once the option is set in Camera Setting in the device.
Visitor: yes but it works one time the n the next time I take a picture it says say cannot write file to ext sd card.
Stewart: Okay, please let me know the class of the SD card you are using.
Visitor: 10
Visitor: also tried 8
Stewart: Thank you.\
Stewart: I am sorry, class 10 Sd card might not be compatible with the device. Please try to check with the class 4 to class 8 SD card.
Visitor: But on your site it shows 32gb class 10 for samsung s3
Stewart: I am sorry, there is no such information on our Website about the class.
Visitor: Samsung sells sd cards for samsung s3 correct?
Stewart: Yes.
Stewart: For product information or assistance with ordering please call Customer Support at 1-800-757-0280 to reach a Samsung Accessory Specialist.
Visitor: if so, the sd cards you show are rated 32gb class 10.
Visitor: If this is not correct, then samsung should be specific as to what gb and clas is appropriate
Visitor: for the samsung s3
Stewart: I apologize for the inconvenience.
Stewart: But as per the information we have Class 8 is compatible with the S3 devices.
Visitor: Since you do not have any complaints regarding this issue, I will forward to forums and friends so they may voice their dilemma. I thank you for your time.

Re: SD card problem with the S3
I can speak from experience that is it not ALL class 10 SD cards that have this problem. I had SanDisk and Lexar class 10. These were the SD cards that were fried in the two GS3s.
I replaced the Lexar with Samsung, still class 10, and I haven't had this problem since. Folks in this and other forums have claimed that the Samsung memory doesn't have this problem -- and they may be right. Only time will tell.

Can you explain to me how you are using your sd cards??
-Are you taking it out of your phone and connecting it to an adapter and plugging it in your pc??...or do you just leave it in your phone always?
-How big of file sizes are you moving? Whats the biggest file size you have moved?
-Do you have multiple copy instances running while transfering?
I'm trying to understand if this is a phone, card or user issue.
BTW, I have had multiple cards in my experience and have only come across problems with read and write errors with cheap brands such as Lexar and Kingston.

Re: SD card problem with the S3
Had been frustrating with my new Sandisk Ultra Class 10 32g that kept saying it is unexpectedly removed - till one day I was about to send my S3 in to demand for replacement, I did a final test of the card on other S3 & phones - & it had the same problem - SO IT WAS THE CARD....
Called Sandisk Distributor & they said it is a known problem between S3 & several SD brands but Sandisk has resolved the issue with the new batch of cards that has just arrived in Dec 2012.
Changed the card one-for-one & plugged it in immediately - Problem solved. Card remains usable again....:D
-
Re: SD card problem with the S3
After reading the the last post I thought I can't deal with this intermittent 'card unexpectedly removed'. Now spoken to Sandisk and having the card replaced, they were laid back about it and arranged for a replacement.

The post after yours confirmed that this is a combination phone/card issue -- not just either one. I'm not taking my cards out of my phones but doing transfers by plugging the USB cord from the phone to my PC and transferring using a file manager app. The files are MP3 files, pictures, and videos -- of various sizes. The MP3s go from my PC to the phone; the videos and pictures, from the phone to the PC.
I used several brands, one of them being SanDisk. So, it's NOT a situation of using cheap SD cards.
And, as I said, since I switched over to using a Samsung SD card, the problems have stopped.
