Soon be Noob--questions!
I'm switching from an iPhone 4S to a Galaxy S3. I haven't had android since the original droid slider on Verizon. So I have a few general questions so I can be prepared when I get the device in hand.
First, what are some unique features to this device that are cool or must-use?
What are your staple applications?
What case are you using? - 11-02-2012, 10:44 AM #2

Thanks, don't keep music on my iPhone tho because of the limited space and my obsessive picture taking

Re: Soon be Noob--questions!
The Possibilites on the phone are endless. anything you couldn't do on the iPhone you can do on the GS3. Change everything from font to the style of vibrations, unlimited number of sounds or music to make ringtones for free.

All you have to do is buy a SD card with 64GB and i promise you dont have enough music or pictures to put on the phone for life.("CEO - Android Central") was revoked from my signature. Guess they should edit you cannot joke in your signature either

Re: Soon be Noob--questions!
I think a must is llama, or tasker if you have the money.
You can customize your phone for almost anything automatically.
I have mine set up like this
9pm until 6:30am turn on aiplane mode and turn on wifi and it goes into silent mode(I do this because I live in the basement so I dont get reception anyways)
When I get to work, it goes back to "work mode" which sets me profile to 1 volume on everything.
When I plug my phone before I go bed it opens up the whatsapp into my gf's profile so I can text her good night( saved my life!!) haha.
Thats just a few things I can do with llama.
Another few things, I just rooted my phone yesterday so I can play playstation(Megaman and Final Fantasy) games with my PS3 controller, and so I could get jellybean. On top of the usual ROMS. ( I am not saying you should root your phone, Im just saying that what I did)
Not using any case, its a big phone already, I dont want to make it bulkier specially since Im considering buying an extended battery.
I also switch from a 4S a last month and after many hours of research( probably like 50 haha, i do research on my phone like its my job) I am very happy with it

Re: Soon be Noob--questions!
people have already suggested a stickie (including me) and jerry gave a scathing reply.
nothing against the OPs, i dont mind helping but a nice big stickie "iphone to s3" and "blackberry to s3" would be a great database and help the converts more i think.
as jerry said though. if he decided what he did and didnt want posted, we wouldnt like these forums much lol.
it does feel like dejavu a lot but its not really the op's fault

Re: Soon be Noob--questions!
i know exactly what you meant, but it happens in every forum. It's just as counterproductive pointing it out, It's also a pain to sift through these threads when they start months before as whats "best" and most interesting changes pretty rapidly. I've searched and read through the threads as well as creating this one. There's a method to my madness.

Re: Soon be Noob--questions!
Couldn't agree more, Shanicenicolle.
And Welcome aboard!
An ex-iPhone'r as well.
Mine's only 3 weeks old, and I haven't hardly dl'd any apps, due to every time I start reading any particular apps reviews. . it seems there's always a few (or more) horror stories. So I keep telling myself—no need to rush into dl'ing a ton of apps—when the stock phone is working fine. Still undecided on whether I'll 'root' or not, but probably will.
I have uninstalled two apps though— Advanced Task Killer & Juice Defender —upon realizing that they weren't working, or doing what I expected them to do, and were actually using more battery 'juice' than they were saving.
Do miss the PBS & MPR iOS apps. TuneIn Radio is a 'staple' app. Been thinking of dl'ing Swype or Swiftkey keyboards; and several of those apps (or similar apps) that GSDer has listed (above), including Titanium Backup & etc. — if I 'root'...which I probably won't be able to resist trying.
I guess my phone's pretty boring, as I mostly populate my home screens with links to fav or handy sites.
lol
Haven't ordered a case as of yet; still running around naked. :0 But about to pull the trigger on a few @ Amazon; posted a few links at this thread, post #22, on the 'AT&T Galaxy S3 Accessories' sub-forum, where there's lots & lots of case threads.Last edited by fr3GStoGS3; 11-05-2012 at 11:26 AM.

Re: Soon be Noob--questions!
Okay. Sorry.
Must have...
Android lost. Always find your phone, read text logs, call logs, if someone changed your sim card, wipe it, lock it, make it take a picture with front facing camera after certain amount of failed unlock attempts, record sound around, and many other things. Perfect app.
Lookout, scan for malware, back up contacts, locate phone (just in case Android lost isn't working right although it usually does., Always need a back up.
Llama profiles, changes profile. Automatically turn on Wi-Fi when you get to home, put your phone on vibrate at certain time or place, automatically turn volume up when you open you YouTube. All these cool things based on time, location, battery, and apps. - 11-05-2012, 05:24 PM #24
Re: Soon be Noob--questions!
+1 for android lost and no battery footprint.
total recall is good. records all calls and mails the recording to u.
handy if u dont have a pen and paper and handy if a thief is usin your phone
AppBrain Ad Detector is one i keep preaching... scans apps while you install them for threats from adware to dodgy permissions, very sensetive
