Default Auto Correct/Word Predict non existent in my J.B 4.1.1 GS3? Frustrating, help!

This should be an easy issue but it's driving me nuts. Trying out a GS3 during a 30 day trial period, as I plan to keep waiting for iPhone 5's to come in readily accessible stock (Apple fan here but enjoying the GS3 and getting to know and experience the Android side of things as well) and I'm finding the keyboard is currently far inferior to the iOS keyboards I've been used to.

I have "Jelly Bean" 4.1.1 and the keyboard is HORRIBLE. There's no auto correct, so unlike my iPhone where I could type in gibberish however as long as I was "swiping" in the general vicinity, it would be intelligent to figure out what I was trying to say, this GS3 has backdated me to dumbphone days where I have to type in exact words. All I get is a very non-intuitive "prediction" under the screen, which not only doesn't figure out lots of misstypes, but I have to actually click it to get it to auto fill.

Is there a way to turn on an Auto-Correct/Prediction where I can just swipe around and it'll figure out what I'm trying to say, a'la iPhone? I checked Settings, etc. and I can't find an "Auto Correct" box or icon anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

EDIT: So in Settings, it shows that I'm using the "Samsung Keyboard", but it's using Googles's Voice Typing. It has the new Google Voice-To-Text and everything. Does this mean the Samsung Keyboard doesn't support the Auto-Correct feature?

Try out SwiftKey 3. I rarely have typos with that keyboard.

Thanks, but from what I see, people are finding Auto-Correct available on the OEM Jelly Bean 4.1.1 keyboard? I'd prefer to stay with this keyboard, I just need to figure out how to turn Auto-Correct on (or find an option for it in this phone, hopefully).

Well, I don't know it it's changed from ICS but you can look in Settings -> Language and input -> Samsung keyboard, then select the wheel at the far right and ensure that Predictive text is set to On

Thanks. Actually predictive text is on, but it just predicts the text in that bar under the tex-box, in which I actually have to manually click the corrected-word to apply it. It doesn't automatically correct it like what I'm used to on the iPhone. Seems odd Samsung or Android would leave out such a simple feature.

My bad - after re-reading your post I see that prediction was already on.
I have seen no sign of auto-correction on the ICS stock keyboard and can't comment on whether it's been added in Jelly Bean (it'll probably be a few months before Verizon releases that).
From reading lots of posts by current/former iPhone users it sounds like the keyboard is far superior to what is available on Android. I am surprised that no one has attempted a 3rd party solution, but then, given the propensity of Apple to sue folks perhaps it's understandable.

No prob. Thanks. Now that you cleared up that we don't have it available I don't have to go crazy trying to figure out how to turn it on.

I have gotten used to the Samsung Keyboard "Swype" (not the actual Swype keyboard but the Samsung version since I want to keep the Google Voice icon available) and it's a somewhat decent solution, but yeah, nothing beats iPhone's keyboard (unless I guess you're really used to the Swype feature and prefer that). I loved just typing gibberish yet as long as I got it in the general gist of area, it would figure out what I was trying to say and apply it. You can literally type without looking at the screen and it'll come out usually pretty perfect.

I too recently upgraded to a JB 4.1.1 device from GingerBread 2.3. I too am really missing the predictive text. My GB2.3 device not only predicted as you typed, but would also select the most appropriate word (or so it thought). This is a serious bug and could not possibly be an oversight.

THANK YOU!! The only post I can find on this topic. How ridiculous right? You can download the jelly bean keyboard for free (which is unrelated to the new android update) and it uses iphone like auto correct. Helped me a lot. I can't imagine how even after the new software that it doesn't include FULL AUTO correct, even when it's obviously capable with an app.

THANK YOU! This has been driving me insane since I upgraded the other day. If anyone finds any solution to this PLEASE let me know. I'm actually pretty surprised Android took this feature out, it doesn't seem like the most intelligent of upgrades.

I too was a big fan of the iPhone until finally seeing the light and snatching up a s3. Ok that being said... The Samsung keyboard absolutely sucks however the Swype keyboard that comes with the phone eats the iPhone's lunch in every way. Predictive text, swiping looks just everything. And if u want to venture out get get a more customizable one, Google Swype beta and create an account then download that one. It is the keyboard of choice for me.

I have a GS 3 and before the jelly bean update the autocorrect was better than any other I've known. Including apple, I've used both. This jelly bean update has ruined a lot of things. Hopefully they'll fix it.

I was having the same problem but switching the Keyboard to SWYPE helped a lot. Not just because the SWYPE function worked better but seems to auto correct better than just the Samsung keyboard.

There's actually an option to turn on auto correct in 4.1.1

    Tap "Language and input"
tap the "Settings" icon next to "Android keyboard"
    scroll down to "Auto correction"

    Hope this helps

I don't understand the attitude that says "I don't want to try SwiftKey." SK's predictive capability is so superior to any other keyboard I've used, including Android 4.1.1 and iPhone, it's easily the keyboard of choice, and well worth the few bucks it costs. I guess I can see the OP's point of view, since he was just ripping off the carrier until he could get a new iPhone, but anyone who keeps an Android phone should try SwiftKey.
PLEASE, when asking for help provide as much information as possible. We can't help unless we know what the symptoms are and what you did before they began.

I have this exact same problem. Updated early this morning on GS3 I747 and it completely broke auto substitute. I always keep this function checked and it just plain doesnt work anymore. It also did something weird to the display on my lock screen. It would show grey blobs that would sometimes fade to normal black after a few moments. I just hope I can roll back versions until this is fixed.

I 100% agree with this sentiment. Honestly, I came from windows phone 7 and 8, both of which had AMAZING prediction / auto-correct compared to iOS and stock Android but even that pales in comparison to swiftkey. Not only does it have the same "word flow" prediction as windows phone, (word flow is when it suggests the next word based on the word you just typed even BEFORE you begin typing the new word. Like if you type "game of" it will come up with suggestions such as "thrones, cards, etc") but you can also customize the keyboard to your liking without feeling overwhelmed with options.

It can also "pre-learn" your typing style from your previously sent text messages saved on your device (a one time process at the start). Honestly, if you plan on using Android for the foreseeable future, you simply HAVE TO try swiftkey. You will be happy you did.

Thanks, but there is no such option in the Samsung Galaxy S3 or Note2 with 4.1.1 (or even 4.1.2).

You're absolutely right - it is unbelievable. The HTCs do it with JB 4.1.1 But not there on the Galaxy Note2 with 4.1.2 or the earlier 4.1.1

I've switched to an S3 from an iPhone a few months ago and I completely echo this sentiment. To those of you on Android who have never owned an iPhone, you can't even imagine how much better the keyboard is for day to day use. As much as I love the extra features and freedoms you get with an Android, the entire experience sucks because I can't accurately type without giving all of my attention to my phone's screen. For anyone who has used an iPhone keyboard and has found some kind of a solution to this, the answer will be much appreciated. Swype isn't a very good solution either, I would guess it wrongly predicts 3 or 4 words per text message for me.

Being a previously faithful Swype user I've forced myself to work with the 4.2 keyboard and I have to say I'm liking it more each day. Every keyboard I've tried has it's own quirks and the stock KB is no different. It's "gesture typing" is very similar to Swype and Swiftkey Flow. I turned off the Dynamic Floating Preview to keep the screen less cluttered. Some may like that on... All in all it's been about as good as I've seen in a stock keyboard so far.
