front camera gone very dark!

hi everyone. I discovered that my front camera is quite messed up after I received a video call. I could see the other person fine. Just my image looked really dark. Literally like the light is off in a dark room the other person could slightly make out my nose. I tried wiping in front of it. Tried switching from tango to Skype. Same thing. Then I tried the main camera app and same issue on the front facing camera. My back camera is as normal. Any idea on what it could be? I tried restarting too. I've not dropped the phone or any other type of damage. So it's very random. I don't want to send it back. I might try a hard reset soon when I get enough time. Any other input is appreciated. If you need any more information just ask me. Thanks.

can anyone help me please? has anyone else experienced this? my phone momentarily freezes when switching from front to back camera. Is this a software problem or hardware?
