So I just purchased a new to me Galaxy S3! I am coming over from using an iphone for years and am super excited.

I would like to root my phone and load the most stable and as close to stock Android as possible Cyanogenmod ROM. The phone should arrive this week so I want to be prepared to do it. Can you guys point me in the right direction? Is this a good idea for me to do?

Thanks

Easiest way to root is to run Odin and use the CF-Auto Root in the Galaxy S3 sub-forum at XDA.

What carrier is your S3 though?

I would counsel against messing with anything for awhile - look at all the posts about 'I didn't know what I was doing and now my phone has problem X'. Spend some time learning about Android; about the Android SDK and ADB; about the current feature set; about the various flavors of CM; about tools like:
AirDroid: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.sand.airdroid
Cloud Drive: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.amazon.clouddrive.photos
Dumpster: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.baloota.dumpster
Helium: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
Nova Launcher: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher
SystemPanel: http://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.systempanel.r1
Wakelock Detector: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector

Then maybe you'll be ready to root and unlock the bootloader.

NEVER load a ROM that's not intended for your model number and carrier.

Your call...

I probably shouldn't, but I have to ask:

If you want stock Android, why on earth purchase an S3. Most of the things that make the S3 what it is are Samsung proprietary, and go away if you flash a "stock" Android ROM. If you want stock Android, buy a Nexus, or a Moto-X, which is a lot closer to stock.

Anyway, to reemphasize what GSDer said: NEVER, ever load a ROM that's not intended for your model number and carrier. Loading a ROM made for Sprint on a Verizon S3, or vice versa, will cause you much grief. Same with T-Mobile and AT&T. Loading a ROM for a GSM carrier on a CDMA phone, or vice versa, will likely cause your phone to not work at all. It may be recoverable, but not simply.

Loading a ROM intended for the international versions of the phone to a North American phone, or vice-versa, will hard brick your device, and the only way to recover will be to send it out for repair (search on JTAG).

There are sub-forums here for every carrier / model of phone. Most of those have a sub-forum about rooting. Finding the rooting sub-forum for YOUR specific model and carrier, and read, read, read before you do anything. If you brick your phone, your warranty will not cover it.

I really loved the Moto X, and really wanted it to get the great battery life as well, however, the camera just stinks on it. I tried it in the store and I hated it. It looks like a camera from a flip phone 6 years ago. Taking pictures is important to me and the S3 has a camera as good as the iPhone 5, which I find good enough for me to print stuff with.

The rom that I would like to load is the most stable daily driver. I think it's CM 10.2 right now. I believe I would also see an increase in battery life from it?

*EDIT* I just did some reasearch and it seems that 10.1 is actually the only "stable" build. Can someone comment?

Or can someone make a suggestion on a ROM? I would like to have the most battery life possible.

I already rooted my phone using odin :)

In all honesty the easiest way to do it is download the cyanogenmod installer app from the Google Play store and follow the directions. You'll need a PC and need to download the installer program from get.cm

I just did this yesterday took 20-30m and its the first time I've ever rooted any device. Worked like an absolute charm! My S3 is running CM10.2 now.
