    Default Factory Reset

I have backed up all the data on my phone and then tried to reset it back to factory settings. It has been on the same screen for hours now. Just the AT&T symbol. Does it normally take this long? Its been ''resetting'' for 5 hours now. I've turned it off and back once

No. You got caught in a boot loop. Pull the battery for a few minutes, and try rebooting again.

Try booting into recovery mode. It's volume up + home + power until you see small blue neon letters in the left hand corner
From there use the volume buttons to scroll down to wipe cache partition and use the power button to select it

That's not working either. It just shuts off. Do I hold the buttons down or just press and release?

Hold then until you see the blue letters. Download mode still works?

That will be rather difficult since her phone is not booting past the AT&T logo...
