I bought a OTG USB, not fully understanding what it does.

I skimmed through a bit of what the OTG USB is about, and from what I gather, it allows you to use your phone like a USB host. I went ahead and bought one, guessing that I will be able to connect its plug into my GSIII, then use the the USB slot to plug in my USB stick to transfer files.
Questions: Will it work? If yes, does it work both ways? Meaning, will I be able to transfer files from my phone to my USB, AND from my USB to my phone? Will I be able to open and view files on my USB without transferring them to my phone's storage?

Thanks in advance.

BTW: it's the "male micro-USB to female USB" kind, and my phone is not rooted.

You may want to try this first: OTG Troubleshooter https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...d=com.homesoft.otgtroubshooter&token=vHm6uCau - this will verify that your phone and the cable play well together.

On my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet I also used: Nexus Photo Viewer https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...=com.homeysoft.nexususb.viewer&token=zk8c0Zgd to verify that I could read pictures from a USB HDD (there's also a paid app from the same developer that reads all file types) - this may not be necessary on the SGS3 but I haven't tried it yet; for all I know you could use something like ES File Explorer: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...ls?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&token=ed8UOSWu and see everything from the get go.

Hey! I can verify that the s3 does have usb host capability and I have several usb otg cables for mine. I would recommend going to your settings menu and then select developer options, then select usb debugging. When you plug a usb flash drive into your otg cable, you can see all your files ( music, pics, PDF files, etc.) that are on the thumb drive. I have transferred HD full length movies from my desktop to a flash drive, and just plugged into my otg cable and watch it on my s3. Pretty cool capability in my opinion.
