HELP - Power Button thinks its being pressed

So I have the Galaxy S3 and I am not able to turn on my phone. My phone thinks the power button is being pressed down at all times even when the button itself is not. I can click it and it feels like its being clicked, but it thinks its always being pushed down. This means I can pop the battery out and back in and it will restart and get to the second Samsung screen and then it will turn off again because it thinks the power button is being held down. This prevents me from turning it on in Download and Recovery mode as well. I found some sites that said to try to "smack" it on the side and I have tried doing so, but I don't want to do it too hard because I am afraid it will break. Apparently this is a common problem, but it is preventing me from doing anything with my phone and is frustrating the hell out of me. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I was having the exact issue. I ended up breaking the power switch off the motherboard (not the outer power button, the actual switch itself). Here's the story:

It worked for me. I don't have a power switch anymore, but it got rid of the problem.
