Question OTA Update-Will root be gone?

Hello, I was wanting to know if the 4.4 KitKat update releases for VZW SIII if it would "remove" root. Would I need to unroot my device? My device is rooted but says Official in the system status. Will this re-enable knox because SuperSU disabled it? Will I brick my phone if I take the OTA with root? Should I unroot via SuperSU app or something else? Please answer guys I need some help :P

    Welcome to the forums!

You're jumping the gun here since it's Sprint that has announced a KitKat release, and Verizon is usually late to the party.

    But I digress...
You haven't provided enough information to help you, and generally speaking if you want to be able to utilize an OTA the best way to ensure success is to flash the stock firmware and the accept the OTA when it becomes available. Of course, if you're going to all of that trouble then you might as well wait until the official firmware is released and then flash that and be done with it.

    Missing information:
    - does your phone have custom recovery software installed?
    - did you accept the official 4.3 build with the Knox bootloader?
    - have you deleted/frozen any bloatware?
    - what root method did you use?
    etc...

    Okay, that's great info!
With Saferoot you should be able to just accept the OTA whenever it's released. If it happens to fail I'm pretty sure that you can use SuperSU to unroot the device and then rerun the Software Update process and it should complete successfully.

Stay tuned to the Saferoot thread on XDA as I'm sure you'll see comments from those that are getting the KitKat release.

Actually I have one more question, How can you tell if KNOX is tripped? I didn't find anything in download mode like other people said to do. My phone says custom in the beginning and in device status it doesn't say offical or modified but custom.

This is approximately what Download (aka Odin) mode shows:

    ODIN MODE
    PRODUCT NAME: SCH-I535
    CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
    CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
    SYSTEM STATUS: Official
    Warranty Bit: 0
    QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE

If the Warranty Bit is 1 then the Knox counter has been tripped.

I unrooted my phone a few days ago and it said custom. I then rooted back. How do I make it so it says official if I unroot?

You can use Samsung Kies (just Google it - look for v3) or Odin (just Google it - look for v3.07). If you use Odin you'll also have to download the firmware, which you should be able to do find here - select your device in the drop-down list in the upper left corner. You can find instructions on how to use Odin in any of the rooting sub-forums.
