Phone calls/apps work but screen will randomly blackout with buttons around home button lighting up

Hey,
So my S3 has recently started doing this thing where when I press the home button, my screen remains black and the two bottom buttons around the home button light up. They remain lit up until eventually a few minutes later they stop glowing. It'll keep doing this until I just leave the phone alone for a few minutes... after which I try pressing the home button again and it starts to work again. I haven't dropped my phone at all, and it hasn't come into contact with any water.
What could be the problem and how do I fix it?

The first thing you should try is booting into Safe mode http://support.verizonwireless.com/support/devices/knowledge_base.html/59242 - if the problem goes away then some 3rd party app is causing your problem.

If that doesn't help you can try booting into Recovery mode and clearing the system cache (non-destructive).

Last would be a Factory Reset.
